With a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul, Cozumel is a paradise where tradition, flavor and joy come together. Since its inception, IRONMAN Cozumel has attracted athletes for its fast, at times challenging, and scenic course.

With a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul, Cozumel is a paradise where tradition, flavor, and joy come together. Famous for its stunning coral reefs – the Cozumel reef system is the second largest in the world – the island offers plenty of water sport options. Besides diving and snorkeling, there is kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, and more. Cozumel is an ideal vacation destination for the whole family, with beautiful, natural beaches and crystal-clear blue waters.

Cozumel is also a paradise for cyclists, with a unique bike-only road that runs partly directly along the ocean, and with exotic jungle trails for mountain-bikers.

This will be our 13th year servicing this grand event in Cozumel, Mexico.

For those preferring a shorter distance race, we will also support IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel in September.

Ken's take on this race

Cozumel is a great family “racecation” as there are things for everyone to do before and after the race, and the racecourse is very spectator friendly. I suggest arriving 4 or 5 days before the race to relax and enjoy some easy rides on the course as well as some great open water swimming in the crystal-clear water. Check at the bottom of this message for all the great things to do on Cozumel as well as on the mainland.

Logistics wise, it does take some planning (but EST has that covered) as registration, expo and the race meetings are all in town as is T2 where you will need to drop your running gear.

The practice swim and bike check-in are south of town on Saturday. So, no matter where you stay, you need to get around a bit pre-race, race morning and after the race.  We take care of all the driving, so you don’t need to rent a car, constantly hire taxis or walk everywhere. If you use TriBike Transport, we also pick up your bike for you and bring it to the resort.

EST uses two all-inclusive resorts next to each other that are just south of the swim and T1. We do this because open water swimming is great right at the resort, cycling and running are both very safe before the race and getting to the practice swim, bike check-in and to the race site on Sunday morning are all very easy. Also, being right on the ocean is great for family fun. On race morning, we take the spectators to the swim, then back to the resort for breakfast and to watch the bike (it passes three times in front of the resort). We then have multiple shuttles into town to see T2 and the run where we have a tent set up at the bike dismount as well as an oceanfront restaurant just 200 meters from the finish where the athletes pass in front of six times. After the race, we have multiple shuttles all evening to take spectators, athletes and bikes back to the resort.

Here are some things to keep in mind when training for IRONMAN Cozumel:
Swim: The swim will be non-wetsuit as the water temperature in late November is around 82F (28C). It is a point to point swim heading north to south. You will normally be swimming into a current the first few hundred meters, and then you will suddenly have the current with you pushing you the rest of the way to the finish. This may seem odd as you are going the same direction, but there is a freshwater current that enters the ocean 300 to 400 meters south of the start that causes this change in ocean current. So, don’t be discouraged as overall it is a very fast swim! If you are not a strong swimmer, I suggest doing some strength swimming exercises to help you get through the early part of the swim – swimming with a band around your ankles, pulling a bucket, or wearing a drag suit.
Bike: Cozumel is probably the flattest bike course of all the IRONMAN races. So, you need to spend a lot of time doing long rides in the aero position. This 2-loop bike course has a reputation for strong winds along the beautiful east coast, so disk wheels are not allowed. The wind is not a constant as you can have calm days, mild to strong crosswinds, headwinds or tailwinds! So, train for the hardest conditions with some long steady-state big gear riding to simulate riding into a strong headwind.
Run: Just like the bike, the run is dead flat, which can lead to some fast run times for those that are prepared. The run is 3 x 7km out and back along the waterfront, so while it may be warm, there is almost always a breeze and the crowds are very enthusiastic. You should do a lot of your long runs and transition runs on a flat course to get used to running for so long on a flat course. If it has been a wet November, the mosquitos can be a problem at the far end of the run course where there is a lot of vegetation, so if you will be running in the dark, I recommend mosquito repellent in your run transition bag as well as your special needs bag.

Things to do on Cozumel:
*One of the best places in the world for scuba diving and snorkeling – the northern part of the second-largest coral reef in the world runs along the western coast of Cozumel
*Punta Sur Eco Beach Park – some nice beaches, history of the area and history of navigation in the area, crocodiles and other wildlife
*Visit east coast beaches and restaurants – the ocean can be very clam or very wild depending on the wind, either way, it is a beautiful coastline and a great place to ride your bike as there is a bikes only road right along the beaches!

*Visit San Gervasio archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. This is the site where Mayan women paid tribute to the goddess of love and fertility.
*Go on the Atlantis Submarine – Dive to depths of 100 feet in a submarine
*Go to a beach club with inflatables in the ocean, waterslides, restaurants, pools, etc.
*Eat at a local small family restaurant for great tacos, tortas and more!
*Go horseback riding or on a jeep tour of the island
*Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park snorkeling experience including animal shows, snorkeling gear, and botanical gardens with Mayan replicas.

Things to do near Cozumel:
These can be done as day trips going across to Playa del Carmen by ferry (30 minutes) and then doing an organized tour or renting a car for the day.
*Chichen Itza – This renowned archaeological site is the most essential item on any Cancun sightseeing list. The restored pyramid at its heart crowns an iconic city from Mayan mythology.
*Tulum – Walk through Tulum and Coba, the most impressive Mayan archaeological sites in the area. Swim in a natural sinkhole with turquoise waters. Learn about Mayan culture while visiting a real Mayan community.
*Holbox – Spend a day on one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most beautiful islands. Almost no cars as golf carts, walking and bikes are the main transportation
*Xel-Há – A unique experience with all kinds of land and water activities for the whole family. A universe dedicated to ecology and the preservation of flora and fauna, it offers constantly developing environmental programs to protect and conserve the environment.
*Xcaret Park, a paradise theme park on the Maya Riviera, where you can enjoy more than 40 activities and attractions such as the Coral Reef Aquarium and Marine Turtles Area, the Manatee Lagoon, the Butterfly Pavilion, Spider Monkey Island or the Living Museum of Orchids
*Shopping in Playa del Carmen – A large selection of shops both local and international brands are located here.
