2022 IRONMAN Austria
IRONMAN Austria takes place in Klagenfurt, the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Carinthia. The 800-year-old town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee, one of Europe’s largest and warmest Alpine lakes, with drinkable purity. The beautiful landscape of mountain peaks around the lake is breathtaking.
We have reservations at the Hotel Gretl, a quiet, family-run hotel just 2.5km from the race start, along the bike and run course.

Ken's take on this race
Klagenfurt is a great spot to take the family. There are things for everyone to do before and after the race locally as well as in other areas of Austria as well as the nearby countries of Italy, Slovenia, and Germany. I suggest arriving 4 or 5 days before the race to relax, adjust to the time change and enjoy some easy rides on the course as well as some great open water swimming in the crystal-clear water and exploring the local area.
You have a few options for how to get to Klagenfurt, and what you plan to do after the race will help determine what is most convenient as well as most economical. Send us an email or give us a call to discuss all the options. We will pick you up at the Klagenfurt airport (KLU), or if you fly into another airport and take the train, we will pick you up at the Klagenfurt train station.
We have all the logistics covered for race week. With a local staff that has been working with us since 2006, you can rest assured you and your family will be well taken care of. We use a family-owned and managed hotel along the bike and run course and just a few blocks from a great beach park at the lake. We run shuttles into the expo/registration area each day, and there are restaurants right near the hotel, but we also run dinner shuttles into Klagenfurt for more restaurant options. We have multiple shuttles for athletes and family on race morning as well as shuttles all evening to take spectators, athletes, and bikes back to the hotel. We set up a tent for spectators at a great viewing spot on the run course so your family can see you multiple times.
Here are some things to keep in mind when training for IRONMAN Austria:
The temperatures can vary in Austria in summer, but more often than not, it is warm to hot in late June and early July with a strong sun. Make sure you have sunscreen! You should check the forecast before leaving home just to make sure there is not a cold front so that you pack appropriately.
Swim: The swim is almost always wetsuit legal. It is a well-marked one-lap swim course in crystal clear water in the lake and finishes up a canal, which is great for spectators. It is usually a fast swim.
Bike: The bike course has two separate laps with the first being new as of 2019 that goes through lots of villages near Klagenfurt before coming back into town and heading out along the lake to do another 90k that was the course for many years. While the course is not mountainous, it does have a good number of uphills as well as flat sections along the lake and some long gradual downhills. The road surface is good to excellent, so the times are pretty fast.
Run: The run course is almost dead flat and has great spectator support. There are some shaded sections along the canal as well as through the park, but some sections are exposed to the sun, so make sure you put sunscreen on for the run.
I strongly suggest planning to spend time in Europe after the race as you can easily access some great places from Klagenfurt, including Vienna, Munich, Venice, and Slovenia. We can help you with suggestions for shipping your bike home after the race to make it easy for you to travel around by train or car without having to hassle with taking your bike along with you.
We take care of all the Travel details so you can Focus on your Race.
