Ken's take on this race

If you are flying from North or South America, you will most likely have an overnight flight plus you will cross the international dateline, so even with a direct flight, you will arrive two days after you leave. For example, if you leave Los Angeles on Saturday evening, you will arrive in Auckland on Monday morning. Fortunately, you have time travel on your side 😊 when returning home and can arrive home before you left!! For example, if you leave Auckland on Saturday evening, you will arrive in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, 12 hours before you left! I suggest arriving in New Zealand on Monday or Tuesday to allow yourself time to adjust after the flight, get some easy rides and runs in on the course, and some amazing open water swims in crystal clear Lake Taupo. You can also enjoy some of the great food and day trips in Taupo. Remember, the women’s race is Saturday and the men’s race is Sunday with the awards ceremony on Sunday evening.

Flying into Auckland and traveling to Taupo by car/van is best as the flights from Auckland to Taupo are on very small planes, and chances are your bike will not go on the flight with you. We provide an optional Auckland/Taupo/Auckland transfer so you can relax and enjoy the scenery after your long flight.

If you decide to rent a car and drive to Taupo or drive around New Zealand before or after the race, please be very careful as it is left-side driving and the roads outside the main cities are small rural roads, but they have many trucks from the diary and logging industries.

Things to consider when training for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship:

Swim: The swim will take place in crystal clear Lake Taupo, and it will be a wetsuit legal swim with water temperatures normally in the 59F (15C) to 65F (18C) range depending on how warm the spring has been. The swim is one lap with the buoys on your right. If there is little wind or the wind is from the north, the lake can be as smooth as a swimming pool. If the wind is strong and from the south, it can be a choppy swim with the chop hitting you on the right on the way down and the left on your way back, so it would be good to practice breathing to both sides so you can adjust. You will have a 400-meter run plus some stairs to climb to get into the transition.

Bike: The bike course can be fast or slow depending on the amount and the direction of the wind on race day. It is one 90km lap. The road surface has almost no potholes, but it is predominately a chip seal that, in some areas, is worn in and smooth along with some newer sections that have a higher rolling resistance, so a bit lower tire pressure is usually a good thing. While there are some hills, there are also a lot of flat sections, so, while training, you will want to do a good combination of riding long sections in the aero position as well as doing some hill repeats for strength. I recommend bringing a dry shirt to put on after the swim, arm warmers, gloves and toe warmers as the first part of the bike can be cool if it was a cold night.

Run: The run course is mostly along the lake and undulating. It is two 10.5k laps, and it should be a fast run because of the nice temperatures for running, and the constantly changing terrain naturally adjusts your running stride throughout. The hills are mostly gradual up and down with any steeper hills being less than 200 meters long. The crowd support along the course is great.

We have a great list of restaurants for you to pick from, including food from all over the world.

You can pick from local cafes to fine dining.

We will be offering a Maori Cultural Experience as well as a very traditional Maori Powhiri welcome dinner in Taupo. Please click here for information.

There are many day trips that you can do right in Taupo or just on the edge of town, and we can help you decide what to do and, in many cases, provide the transport to them if they are not within walking distance. Here are a few of the many things athletes and family can do: visit Huka Falls and walk along the Waikato River, trout fishing and jet boat rides on the Waikato River, sailing, boat tours, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing and swimming in Lake Taupo, soak in natural hot springs, visit Lava Glass, DeBrets Spa Resort, Craters of the Moon, Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley or challenge yourself by hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Even though it is not a large country, you could easily spend a couple of months exploring all there is to see in New Zealand! Given how far you will have traveled to get to New Zealand, I suggest arriving 5 to 7 days before your race as there is so much to do locally. After the race, you should spend at least a week to explore things either on the North Island or South Island. If you want to see both the North and the South Island, you will need at least two weeks to do that properly, so most will need to pick either the North Island or the South Island. EST can take your bike to Auckland after the race and store it near the airport for you so you can explore without having the hassle of looking after your bike. Staying on the North Island makes it a lot easier as you will not need to fly and can just travel by car or on an organized tour, so you don’t have to drive on the left side! Endurance Sports Travel will have two optional after race North Island Tours, one for 3 days/2 nights and the other for 5 days/4 nights.

Some of the things to see on the North Island:

Waitomo Caves (amazing caves with glow worms), Otorohanga Kiwi House (see and learn about the Kiwi bird), Rotorua (geothermal activity and world-famous mountain biking), North Island wineries, Hobbiton Movie Set, Coromandel Peninsula (hot water beach, Cathedral Cove and white sand beaches), Auckland – the City of Sails, Bay of Islands, Kauri Forest (some of the oldest and largest trees in the world), 90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga (the top of New Zealand where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean), Hobbiton Movie Set, Taranaki (great surfing and Mt. Taranaki National Park)

Some of the things to see on the South Island:

Some of the best hikes in the world are on the South Island of New Zealand.

Christchurch – learn about the city’s history and the two recent devastating earthquakes and the city’s recovery, Christchurch is a great place to fly into if you want to explore Nelson Lake National Park, Abel Tasman National Park, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, Greymouth and Arthur’s Pass.

Queenstown – a great town and the perfect place to fly into to explore Mount Cook National Park, Mount Aspiring National Park, Franz Josef Glacier, Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound (a fiord surrounded by beautiful mountains and waterfalls, home to seals, dolphins and penguins).

We take care of all the Travel details so you can Focus on your Race.
