Ken's take on this race
Pucon is one of my favorite places to go, and the race is excellent. If you are coming from outside South America, I suggest you arrive no later than Wednesday and if you are coming from another South American country to arrive by Thursday. After the race, I suggest staying with us in Pucon for as much of the week after the race as you can to enjoy all the amazing day trips that you can do. These include climbing Villarrica Volcano, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, hiking in some amazing national parks, zip-lining through the tree canopy, sailing on the lake, and going to incredible hot springs including the world-famous Termas Geometricas!
You should book your plane ticket into Temuco Airport (ZCO), which is about 90k from Pucon. Our package includes the round-trip transfer between Temuco and Pucon.
Pucon has an incredible number of restaurants all within walking distance of the hotel, so there are lots of options for lunch and dinner each day.
Here are some things to keep in mind when training for IRONMAN 70.3 Pucon:
You should bring some cool weather riding gear in case it is a cold morning. The sun is very strong in Chile during the summer, so make sure you have plenty of sunscreen. Most mornings are cool, and then by mid-day, it can be in the low 80’s (28C).
Swim: The swim will be wetsuit legal as the water temperature is usually about 65F (18C).
The swim has two separate swim laps with a 10-meter run on the beach between each lap, and the start is done as a time trial start within each age group.
Bike: The bike course is 45k out and comes back on the same road.
The course has a slow road surface as most of it is a chip seal, so you are best off with 25mm tires and not too much pressure. It is a beautiful course with some gradual hills, long flat sections through a valley with views of four live snowcapped volcanos.
Run: The run course is three laps consisting of distinct hilly and flat sections. You have about 50 meters of flat running after the transition before running 4k of up and down hills overlooking the lake and with Villaricca Volcano in the distance. You then do a 3k flat section in town with amazing spectator support.
After repeating this three times, you finish on the beach along the lakefront.

In 2020 we will donate $5 US-Dollar from each of our clients’ payments to Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia. Of course, this is just a small part of the financial support that is needed to help these critically endangered great apes. That is why we encourage you to check out BOSA’s website and have a look at the amazing work this organization supports. Thank you for helping us help them!
